Natural fancy color diamonds are typically evaluated primarily on color intensity, meaning that deep, vivid shades of color are valued much higher than a pale version of the same color. The presence of secondary colors can increase or decrease the value of the stone as well.

The GIA standard grading system for natural fancy color diamonds rates hue, tone and saturation:

Hue: The characteristic color of the diamond.

Tone: The relative lightness and darkness of the color.

Saturation: The color’s depth or strength

Using highly controlled viewing conditions and color comparators, a fancy color diamond grader selects one of 27 hues, then GIA offers two types of grading report for natural color diamonds.
