Natural colored diamonds available in an array of spectacular natural colors, colored diamonds range from gentle yellows to deep browns, rich greens to translucent blues, warm pinks to regal reds, and virtually any shade in between.

Since there is only a 1 in 10,000 chance that any diamond will possess any natural color, and each diamond is over a billion years old, colored diamonds are prized gemstones that occur naturally in our earth in all colors and sizes.

In the 6th century AD, the first diamond color grading system was introduced in India. The system allocated different natural color diamonds by class structure, whereby different ranks of society wore different colored diamonds. To this day, natural colored diamonds still carry meaning in many cultures; brilliant purple, for example, denotes royalty, luxury, and ambition.

Diamond color grading has, however, evolved since those times, and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has developed an extensive system for grading naturally colored diamonds using 27 hues. In addition to color identification, the strength of a colored diamond is now graded from light to vivid. The value of natural colored diamonds increase with the strength of their hue and, as a result, the clarity of colored diamonds is less important than their color, and colored diamonds have different cutting standards to colorless diamonds. When cutting a colored diamond, diamantaires focus on maximizing their color and brilliance.

While colorless diamonds are still the most popular choice, natural colored diamonds are growing in popularity. Australia’s Argyle mine began advertising its yellow and brown diamonds as “champagne” and “cognac” in the 1980s, which helped draw attention to these rare and beautiful gemstones. Colored diamonds are also mined in Argentina, Asia, Indonesia, South Africa, and Venezuela.
