How To Clean a Diamond Ring

It doesn’t take very long for your beautiful diamond to lose its sparkle. Makeup, hair spray, shampoo, soap, or hand lotions are some of the culprits that can dull your diamond’s brilliance. In addition, unkempt jewelry can be a breeding ground for bacteria that can lead to some skin irritations. Simply wearing it on a regular basis – or even just sitting in your jewelry box can also affect the brilliance. Diamonds are like natural magnets and attract dust and grease. When a diamond is handled, oils from your fingers adhere to the diamond and affect its brilliance. A once or twice a week cleaning will keep your diamond looking beautiful with its maximum sparkle!

The best way to keep your diamond ring looking brilliant is to visit Alex & Co. and let us treat your ring to a complimentary cleaning. If you have an at-home ultrasonic cleaner this is another option to keep your rings and other precious jewelry clean. An ultrasonic cleaner is a small machine that works by emitting high-frequency sound waves. When you place your items into the cleaning solution (a simple solution of hot water and dishwashing liquid) the bubbles created by the ultrasonic waves in the cleaner loosens and removes the dirt from your jewelry. These countertop ultrasonic cleaners are available for purchase at Alex & Co.

If an at-home ultrasonic cleaner isn’t available you can prepare a solution with warm water (almost hot) and dishwashing soap. Soak your ring for about 20 to 40 minutes, gently brush the stone with a soft toothbrush and rinse well under warm running water. If needed, repeat.

In addition to dish soap, you can use shampoo or body wash. But whatever you choose to clean your ring, just avoid anything moisturizing. Products that moisturize tend to leave a film, which is exactly what you’re trying to avoid. However, when you clean with a brush there are limitations to where the brush can reach. Some pieces of jewelry have small crevices that make it difficult for a brush or other cleaning solutions to get to. Intricate and fragile settings (older prongs or antique jewelry) shouldn’t be vigorously scrubbed, so be gentle with that toothbrush! Then, just rinse your jewelry with water and dry it with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid paper towels, they can actually scratch the metal. Make sure to never use sharp objects to remove particles or residue within the setting-if you’re not careful you could loosen the diamond or scratch the metal.

Don’t use harmful solutions like chlorine bleach, acetone, or abrasives. Chemicals like chlorine can damage some of the metals and abrasives can scratch gold and other metals. While you can easily dislodge surface buildup and restore shine yourself, cleanings at Alex & Co. will safely remove the hard layers of deep, compressed dirt and residue. It should be noted that home cleanings are not a replacement for professional upkeep. Visit Alex & Co, Boston jewelers at our Newton, MA location, and let us give your jewelry the once over! We’ll perform a visual inspection, check your prongs to make sure your stone(s) are secure, clean your ring(s) and give your jewelry the attention it deserves!
